Main Purpose and Context of Role: We are expanding our team to support clients in the Canadian marketplace. This role offers the excitement of a start-up environment with the full backing of a leading reinsurance company. The successful candidate should have experience underwriting large cases from medical, non-medical, and financial perspectives. Position Mandate: Reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, the Underwriting Director will evaluate facultative risks for client companies, focusing on large cases. The role requires timely case turnaround, adherence to client service standards, and exceptional service delivery. The candidate should have the motivation and aptitude to take on strategic responsibilities long-term. They must thrive in an entrepreneurial setting and be confident engaging daily with senior clients and colleagues. This role is critical in raising the company’s profile in Canada and supporting corporate objectives. Key Responsibilities: Apply sound underwriting judgment on facultative cases, particularly high-net-worth business, with signing authority up to $20M. Respond to client inquiries, providing technical support, informed opinions, and underwriting expertise. Develop and maintain strong client relationships through daily communication and office visits. Support Actuarial, Administrative, and Marketing departments and contribute to cross-departmental projects. Improve operational efficiencies, mitigate risk, and uphold underwriting and auditing standards. Represent the company at national and regional underwriting meetings, conferences, and workshops. Stay informed on evolving underwriting practices, sharing insights with leadership. Document and present client visit findings to senior leadership. Foster strong business relationships with internal colleagues. Support contestable claims review when required. Professional Experience, Qualifications, and Competencies: University degree in business, finance, or economics, with at least 10 years of underwriting experience, specializing in life underwriting (preferably including critical illness & disability). FLMI, AALU, or FALU designation preferred, or willingness to pursue professional accreditation. Proven ability to manage underwriting and client responsibilities while ensuring high-quality service. Strong verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex information clearly. Self-sufficient, adaptable professional with strong time management and prioritization skills. Adheres to internal policies and procedures, focusing on maximizing shareholder value. Acts as a role model, upholding company values, promoting best practices, and embracing diverse perspectives. Demonstrates integrity, loyalty, and commitment, earning the trust of colleagues and clients. Fluency in English required; fluency in French is an asset. Location: The Underwriting Director may work remotely from a home office or at corporate headquarters.
