The Salvation Army Thrift Store, National Recycling Operations, is a division of The Salvation Army – one of the largest non-governmental direct providers of social services in Canada. We help generate funds to support local programs and services like food banks and homeless shelters while contributing to environmental sustainability through retail and recycling. Reporting to the National Marketing & Communications Manager, the Communications & Engagement Specialist is responsible for developing and nurturing relationships between the organization, media, guests & donors, and employees through educational storytelling, internal & external campaigns and other initiatives in support of the communications & engagement strategy. The successful candidate is a proactive, resourceful, and highly organized individual who has the ability to self manage. As they will work on a diverse set of communication activities, they will be required to learn quickly, problem solve, and adapt to change. ACCOUNTABILITIES: Internal Communications Identify opportunities, design, develop and implement communications tactics to support and enhance the corporate brand, employee engagement and Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging initiatives Oversee the implementation of the quarterly newsletter, including writing engaging articles Work with internal stakeholders on various communications pieces and needs as required Lead consistency of messaging across all channels in accordance with the organization’s and NRO’s marcomm department guidelines Support educational & training content and creation Develop, maintain and share annual communications calendar External Communications: Prepare a variety of communications products including media releases, biographies, advisories; briefing materials; speaking notes; and campaigns Lead on key messaging development and delivery support messaging with media, community, and other internal and external stakeholders Draft press releases and serve as the spokesperson for media interviews and inquiries as needed Cultivate and manage relationships with media, journalists and key influencers Media monitoring & outreach Strategic communication planning, development, implementation and evaluation for GoodWorksWork fundraising campaigns and programs Write scripts: radio advertisements, guest services, donations, in-store announcements Research and craft compelling stories and articles for the thriftstore.ca website. Oversee content messaging for campaigns (sale events, grand openings etc.) Supports in creating and updating any content and/or messaging as needed for standard and one-off responses Participates in monitoring and engaging with Guest & Donors Community Events and Engagement: Work collaboratively with other departments for community relations activities Develop relationships with key community stakeholders for store events: including grand openings, store closures, anniversaries, local community events and rewards and recognition Represent the organization on community initiatives, as required Active participation in planning and execution of events such as Grand Openings, anniversaries and local community initiatives WORKING CONDITIONS: Working environment is primarily remote work with some in-office attendance on occasion, office located in Oakville, ON. Limited travel and some scheduled overtime will be associated with this position; on occasion, may work outside of regular business hours as business needs require Carry a cell phone and work on-call as needed The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision, and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct. QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: A university degree or college diploma in public relations, communications, journalism, or other related discipline. A minimum of three years of related progressive experience in public relations, communications, or journalism in an organizational setting. Fluency in French is an asset. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite. Outstanding time management skills and attention to detail. Excellent project coordination skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities as required. Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team environment to meet tight deadlines. Positive, enthusiastic, solution-focused and will take initiative. Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army and The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Flexibility to work outside regular business hours and availability on short notice to address media issues if they arise. Competitive compensation including: • Starting wage range of $55,700 to $65,000, depending on experience.
